As a photographer working on industrial projects in Calgary and throughout Western Canada, safety on site is a serious consideration. Working within each clients regulations and protocols keeps me and my team safe while ensuring the peace of mind of the marketing team and the safety team.
It’s not a secret that safety is important on any job site. It’s our duty as professionals to make sure we’re working within all safety regulations so that we can stay safe and keep our clients happy too! As a photographer, it means understanding the client’s unique workspace and listening to their safety team when it comes to do’s and don’ts for our photography. While we want to get the best and most creative shots for our clients we sometimes have to think outside the box when the site limitations have to guide our creativity.
Having appropriate training for specific circumstances as well as wearing the recommended PPE (personal protective gear) is key to staying safe, and in the client’s good graces on a site. The initial safety briefing is just as important as the creative brief and as professionals it is our job to take it seriously.
A couple tips in advance.
– In construction, it’s important to wear safety glasses and gloves and steel toe boots where mandated.
– If the client has dangerous chemicals or tools on site that we need to be aware of them, and make sure you know where they are, and how they are being handled before photographing in those areas.
– When working with machinery keep distance at all times! Never put yourself at risk with unfamiliar equipment. If in doubt ask someone on site.
– Ensure safety equipment if asked to be working at heights. Safety harnesses, and lines are there to provide insurance to you.
Industrial job sites in Alberta and Western Canada offer a great opportunity for creative photography, but first and foremost think safety.
